Artprize 2018 Information

September 19 - October 7

Silvana Amodio - Art Horse Project

September 19 – October 7, 2018

What is ArtPrize?

ArtPrize began nearly nine years ago as an experiment – a totally new event, unlike anything the world had ever seen. For 19 days each fall, three square miles of downtown Grand Rapids become an open playing field where anyone can find a voice in the conversation about what is art and why it matters. Art from around the world pops up in every inch of downtown, and it’s all free and open to the public.

ArtPrize Made Easy – Perk for Hotel Guests

ArtPrize Hotel ShuttleInterested in coming to Grand Rapids to experience ArtPrize?

Each year our area hotels offer ArtPrize Hotel Packages that include special discounts and offers. This year, Grand Rapids hotel guests have an easier way to visit ArtPrize – just make your way to the Park & Ride location within 10 minutes of your hotel and board the shuttle (locations and wrist bands provided at your hotel). We’ll drive you downtown so you don’t have to worry about traffic and parking. It’s the simple, stress-free way to see the world’s most radically open art competition!

What Makes ArtPrize Unique?

You = Creator

ArtPrize is a platform for creation. The organizers are just a small part of the whole. Everyone brings something unique to the table, and we’re excited to see what you bring.

ArtPrize = Catalyst

This grand civic project began with the value that art is important. It is uniquely capable of carrying the ideas of its creator and transforming the perceptions of an audience.

Art = Community

Art is the focus of the competition, but the main event is community. Artists take over the city, visitors explore and new relationships form. Communities open to new ideas organically. The community keeps growing, even after the event is over.

Public Vote = Winner

Public vote determines the top prize. Anyone over the age of 16 can register to vote. Cast your votes via mobile app, text message (SMS), and at artprize.org.

Round 1 (First 11 days): Explore ArtPrize and vote for the entries you think should win.There are four voting categories: 2-D, 3-D, Time-Based, and Installation. The first round narrows down the field of 1,500 artist entries to two sets of finalists — twenty decided by public vote and twenty by expert jury.

Round 2 (Next 5 days): New for 2017, the second round of voting will include both the top 20 public and the top 20 jury finalists making a total of 40 finalists. Regardless of how they were selected, the voting public and the jury of art experts can consider all 40 finalists when choosing the winners of their respective awards.

Two $200,000 grand prizes and $100,000 in category awards will be awarded – half decided by public vote and half decided by a jury of art experts.
